Cornhusker Traditions

Alumni Masters WeekEvery year, accomplished alumni from every college come back to campus for Alumni Masters Week. The event recognizes outstanding alumni who have been successful in their professions. Throughout the week, lunch events are held, as well as the Alumni Masters Week reception. Here, Masters share their invaluable knowledge and career tips and give advice to students. Learn tips and tricks from the Masters and network along the way. Spring of 2021 saw Alumni Masters Week meet in a virtual space over Zoom.

Athletics Hall of FameSouthwest of the Coliseum, the Athletics Hall of Fame was completed in fall 2015, with the first Hall of Fame class including 22 former student athletes. Since then a new class of outstanding student athletes are named every year, representing all 24 Husker Athletic programs. Open to the public at all times, this plaza is a historical journey of Nebraska Athletics.

Away Game: Big Red fans across the country make their presence known at any Husker athletic event, even if it's outside of Nebraska! Take a plane, car or train to cheer on your favorite team with a group of friends or family. Wherever you go, you’re guarenteed to meet some friendly local fans who share the same passion for the Huskers that you do (and some rival fans who always compliment Husker fans on their sportsmanship). Sport your red gear proudly at any out-of-state competition to check off this experience.

Bell Tower: If you've ever heard "Hedwig's Theme" chiming through campus, you've experienced Mueller Tower's electronic broadcasting system. Up to 750 specialized recordings can be controlled remotely by facilities management to sound out of eight speakers. This 84-foot bell tower stands across the greenspace from Love Library as it has since dedication in 1949, funded through a $90,000 gift by Ralph Mueller. On the inside, the walls are lined with red bricks, and maintenance workers ascend a nearly 60-foot spiral staircase to get to the top. The limestone exterior was designed by then-student George Kuska, selected from a competition of architecture students.

Big Red WelcomeBig Red Welcome Street Festival is an event students look forward to every August. This event is held annually in the horeshoe area east of Memorial Stadium. Nicknamed 'Free Stuff Sunday,' Big Red Welcome is the perfect time to learn about the plethora of student organizations on campus and learn about how to get involved in what you're interested in. While you're out and about, grab the free stuff distributed, from T-shirts to food to coupons!

Broyhill FountainA few steps outside the UNL City Campus Union lies one of the most recognizable campus landmarks, Broyhill Fountain. The fountain serves as a memory of Lynn Broyhill, a student who tragically died in 1966. While the fountain has stood since 1969, it was remodeled and moved to its current location in 1996. Head out to the fountain on a warm day and enjoy the lively atmosphere on the campus greenspaces nearby.

Campus RecreationWith three stunning campus recreation facilities - City Campus Rec, East Campus Rec, and the Outdoor Adventure Center - there's no excuse not to be active and adventurous. From state-of-the-art fitness equipment to intramural sports, a climbing wall, group fitness classes, massages, courts and fields, there is something to pique everyone's interest. Grab some friends and take a spin class or kayak down the Niobara River on a guided day trip. You won't regret taking advantage of the amazing campus rec resources.

Career FairIt's not often that a handful of employers gather for several hours in a purposeful effort to meet you and other job seekers. So when a career fair is held on campus, it's smart for you to attend. Whether you're seeking out an internship or job, or just want to see what's out there, a career fair is the perfect answer. Career Fairs are held throughout the year and many are degree-specific. Visit careers.unl.edu to for up-to-date information about fairs coming to campus.

Cornhusker Marching Band PerformanceThe sound of the Cornhusker Marching Band's drumline cadences is the sound of fall on campus. All students regardless of major join together to perform weekly halftime shows on game days, but The Pride of All Nebraska can also be caught warming up in front of Kimball Hall before marching to Memorial Stadium. In addition, they perform an annual preseason exhibition and culminate their hard work at the end-of-season Lied Center highlights show right at the close of fall semester. Support your musically-inclined cohort and cheer when they play the Fight Songs!

Dairy Store: For more than 100 years the UNL Dairy Store has been serving students and the public delicious homemade ice cream, soups, sandwiches, cheeses and wraps made in the on-site plant. Their iconic Scarlet & Cream flavor (a mix of sweet cream vanilla and strawberry) is beloved by many. Prior to the Dairy Store’s construction on East Campus, this campus held a dairy husbandry and barn. The Dairy Store was established, in part, to show the connection between agriculture and the ice cream sold out of the store. Dairy store ice cream is a Nebraska must-have!

Devaney Sports Center: Named after former football coach and athletic director Bob Devaney, the Devaney Sports Center is home to a plethora of Olympic sports teams, including Husker swimming, gymnastics, track and field, wrestling and volleyball. Watch one of these, or catch the annual High School State Basketball Tournament here. Located off Antelope Creek Parkway, the complex opened in 1976 but has recently undergone state-of-the-art renovations.

Fine Arts PerformanceLincoln boasts many opportunities to see a fine arts performance. The Lied Center for Performing Arts on campus is one of the most convenient ways to see a variety of nationally-acclaimed shows, and students receive a discount on tickets. Through Arts for All, some shows are even free. Visit liedcenter.org/events for a listing of shows. There are also opportunities through UNL's Fine and Performing Arts department (events.unl.edu/fpa/upcoming), the Lincoln Community Playhouse and even Wesleyan University. Check out these resources, or find a fine arts performance at another Lincoln venue!

First FridayFirst Friday Artwalks are held on the first Friday of every month at galleries and businesses in downtown Lincoln. The mission of First Friday is to connect artists and creatives with the public to build a better and stronger community. Each first Friday event features well-established and student artists alike. While the event happens monthly, the galleries and restaurants participating do change. For a current listing of participating businesses, and more information on the event as a new month approaches, visit downtownlincoln.org.

Free ExperienceLove completing experiences but feel one is missing? Consider this box your 'free space' for a Cornhusker Experience catered to you. Did you have an experience in college that you'd consider a true Nebraska tradition? Whether it is personal or appliciable to all students, this is your chance to show us what we missed. To complete, snap a photo somewhere or with something you feel played an important and defining role in your time as a Husker.

Fundraise or VolunteerThere are countless ways to give back to the campus and Lincoln communities. Many students walk to raise funds at the Relay for Life, an annual walk and celebration that supports the American Cancer Association. Another popular event is Dance Marathon, a 12-hour philanthropic project that raises money for Children's Miracle Network hospitals. However you choose to knock this experience out, fundraise or volunteer at an event that supports a cause you're passionate about.

Game Day at Memorial StadiumCheer on the Huskers in the Sea of Red at Memorial Stadium and you will be a part of Nebraska’s NCAA-record streak of consecutive sellouts since 1962! Nebraska’s iconic Memorial Stadium seats more than 85,000 loyal fans making it the third largest “city” in the state on game days. You’ll feel the electricity as soon as the team emerges from the legendary tunnel walk and the crowd erupts in cheers and chants of “Husker Power!”

Glow Big RedThe University of Nebraska Foundation's Glow Big Red - a 24-hour Husker fundraising and pride-raising campaign - has called on alumni, fans and friends to give the university a boost annually since 2019. Participate by contributing to support students, lighting up your porch with red light bulbs, wearing your Husker gear and flying your Husker flag. In 2021, $436,033 was raised through 3,899 gifts. Sign-up your RSO, visit the Glow Big Red party in the City or East Campus, or donate to a cause you love to check off this tradition! More details, like stats and leaderboards for this day of Husker giving, can be found at glowbigred.unl.edu

Greek PhilanthropyEvery greek house on campus holds several philanthropies each year to provide entertainment to the student body while also giving back to their community. From tasty late night french toast, to outdoor carnivals, to golf tournaments, these events provide a fun environment for students that support a great cause. Each greek house has a specific charity and all the proceeds from their philanthropies are sent to their respective charities. Visit unl.edu/greek to see upcoming events.

Harper Schramm Smith TunnelsVenture down the mural-filled tunnels under Harper/Schramm/Smith to check this tradition off your list. The underground tunnels connecting the three residance halls provide a welcome path to the dining hall during cold Nebraska winters. The walls of the tunnels, lined with murals painted by past residents, provide a pictorial history of the dorms. Enjoy this little adventure on a frigid day and maybe even stop to take a photo with the infamous Mr. T portrait.

Haymarket Farmer’s MarketFrom early-May to mid-October, streets in the Haymarket shut down every Saturday for the weekly farmers market. Here, local growers and vendors set up booths for Lincolnites to peruse. Bring friends or family here the next time you have a free Saturday morning. Support local farmers and makers and avoid the grocery store lines and prices. Grab a tasty breakfast burrito from a vendor and coffee from another and shop for your delicious locally grown veggies, homemade treats and handcrafted goods.

Haymarket Park"Take me out to the ball game, take me out to the crowd!" Haymarket Park hosts two local baseball teams throughout the year. The University of Nebraska Men's baseball team calls this park home in the spring and games are free for students. During the summer, catch a Lincoln Saltdogs game, Lincoln's independent baseball league. Grab some peanuts and Cracker Jacks, sit back and enjoy a ball game in this beautiful stadium overlooking downtown.

Herbie Husker And Lil’ RedTwo mascots are better than one! Lil' Red is the newest addition to the Nebraska mascots, joining the university in 1993, while Herbie Husker first appeared in 1974. Herbie was named the National Mascot of the Year in 2005, and Lil' Red was inducted into the Mascot Hall of Fame shortly after in 2007. Make sure to snag a photo with one of these celebrites cheering on your favorite team at the next Husker sporting event.

Hibner StadiumCompleted in 2015, Hibner Stadium hosts the Nebraska Tennis and Soccer Complex. This brand new facility was named after Barbara Hibner who spearheaded the challenge to add women's soccer as a varsity sport in 1994. Advanced video and scoreboard technology will make your soccer-viewing experience one-of-a-kind. Or, take in a tennis match at the attached Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center for additional fun.

Homecoming Cornstock Festival & ParadeBorn in 2019 in celebration of Nebraska's sesquinsentennial year was the Homecoming Cornstock Festival, back again for a night of food trucks, a Ferris wheel and games for all. Watch the annual parade wind through campus - student organizations, community groups, Homecoming royalty, and the Cornhusker Marching Band make their way down to East Stadium Loop just in time for more live performaces on stage. Cheer for your favorite jester as they compete for title of the biggest Husker fan in the Jester Competition.

Honor SocietyAcceptance into an honor society is a extremely prestigious achievement. Between Mortar Board, Innocents Society, Order of Omega and Omega Kappa Delta (ODK), only a small percentage of students are selected for honors societies each year. Juniors and seniors are chosen based on their qualities of leadership, academic excellence and involvement. Apply and be accepted into one of these organizations to complete this experience.

International EventExperience a small look into the fascinating cultures that the nearly 3,000 international students bring to UNL by visiting an international event on campus. Maxwell AroboretumMore than 50 years ago, a man began to plant trees near a creek that meandered through the University of Nebraska-Lincoln East Campus. Today, those oaks and evergreens are a towering woodland and the heart of a unique five-acre area bearing his name - the Earl G. Maxwell Arboretum. From the ornate gazebo, paths branch off through the Arboretum where secluded benches and picnic tables offer space for studying, lunching or quiet contemplation. Visit this picturesque area on East Campus and enjoy the beauty and solitude.

Morrill Hall MammothTake a walk by Morrill Hall to see Archie, the enormous mammoth statue outside, created by artist Fred Hoppe. Archie, short for the scientific name 'Archdiskidon,' is a life-sized replica of a mammoth elephant that roamed this area more than 10,000 years ago. This 17-foot-tall bronze statue has lived outside Morill Hall's University of Nebraka State Museum since 1998. To complete this Nebraska tradition, touch the bottom of Archie's foot for good luck.

Mueller PlanetariumLearn about the solar system through a breathtaking virtual experience at the Mueller Planetarium. The planetarium was a gift to the university from industrialist Ralph S. Nebraska State CapitolThe Nebraska State Capitol, the product of a nationwide design competition won in 1920, is described as the nation’s first truly vernacular State Capitol. The bulding stands at 400 feet tall, 15 floors above ground. The Executive, Legislative and Judicial branches are located within separate quadrants. The Capitol was designed with two courtrooms to meet the needs of the Judicial branch of government. Open to the public, this building is located at 15th and K Streets.

Nisei PlazaFollowing Pearl Harbor, Order 9066 was signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt to protect the United States from espionage and sabotage. The order forced all persons of Japanese ancestry into internment camps, interrupting the college education of many Nisei students. Students all across the country were denied college admission, but UNL welcomed them. In gratitude, the Nisei Plaza was presented to the univeristy by Nisei alumni in 1999. The tribute now lives just outside Kimball Hall.

Old GloryAbstract expressionist sculptor Mark di Suvero's "Old Glory" sculpture has sparked a popular legend on campus. The infamous sculpture supposedly contains every letter of the alphabet when viewed from different angles. Gifted to the university in 1986 , the gigantic red sculpture is a popular landmark. The bright red sculpture against the red and white clouds resembles freedom, hence the coined name. Stop by and see if you can find all the hidden letters from A to Z.

Old Iron GatesFrom 1892 to 1922, the old iron gates served as the main entrance to campus. In 1892, City Campus was surrounded by an iron fence to encompass the university and prevent cows from wandering onto campus. While the fence was removed in 1922, the gates remained and were moved around campus for decades until they were finally restored and placed at the northeast side of Memorial Stadium, directly next to The Columns - now put away in storage for relocation.

Perin PorchThe history of East Campus truly centers around this porch. In 1875, S.W. Perin was the superintendent of the campus, and the Perin family lived on campus in a white frame house with an inviting porch. More than 100 years later, the UNL Botanical Garden and Arboreteum constructed a replica of the porch. Today, the porch sits in a beautiful garden on East Campus where students are encouraged to come sit and enjoy the garden.

Student PublicationUNL's main news publication is the Daily Nebraskan, which produces online content daily and is published monthly as a magazine. The Daily Nebraskan features pieces on breaking news, fashion, politics, sports, social change and current events. The univeristy also has another drastically different periodical, the satirical DaileyER, which publishes news in a comical (though false) light. It promises to give you a great laugh. The Big EventTo thank our state and community, UNL puts on a city-wide community service extravaganza each year. The Big Event is a one-day service activity that brings students, staff and faculty together to clean up the Lincoln community. Over 50 volunteer teams are scattered across the city to help give back. After the day of hard work, delicious free food and drinks are given to participants. To help give back and learn more information, visit bigevent.unl.edu.

The ColumnsThe University of Nebraska-Lincoln's "Kissing Columns" have stood faithfully in the northeast shadow of Memorial Stadium for 86 years, stirring up legend of their crumbling should a woman graduate from UNL who has never been kissed. Originally part of the Burlington Station designed by Thomas Kimball, the station was remodeled in 1929 and the columns were surplused. Each of the 28 columns weigh nine tons and stand 24 feet tall, and all nine were sold for the bargain price of just $5,000 total. Now, most of them are tucked away in storage, awaiting relocation, making room for the Husker's new athletic facility. Smaller pieces of the columns can be found as part of the Bob Devaney/Tom Osborne tribute sculpture display on the southwest corner of the stadium.

Tom Osborne and Brooke Berringer StatueOustide Memorial Stadium lies a legendary photo opportunity with the statue of Tom Osborne and Brook Berringer. Berringer was a star Nebraska football player whose life was tragicially taken too soon. The coach and the quarterback have stood bronzed in this place since 2006 and the statue is the most popular photo location at Memorial Stadium. Like sculpture artist Fred Hoppe's work? Torn NotebookThe sculpture, "Torn Notebook," was created by world-renowned artists Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen. The sculpture is the the perfect place to hang out, nap or get homework done on a beautiful day. The giant sculpture, located just behind the Visitor's Center, features a spiral notebook with two nearby pages that appear to be blowing away. The artists are also known for their creation of the infamous Minneapolis sculpture of the spoon and cherry, Spoonbridge.

Tour of Memorial StadiumMemorial Stadium has been home to the Huskers since 1923, but don't let your stadium experiences be limited to the time you spend cheering on your favorite football team. Take a wide-angled look at the stadium by entering Gate 23A, and you'll be immersed in the history of Nebraska athletics. You haven't had the full experience until you've seen West Stadium, the Tom and Nancy Osborne Athletic Complex, and the Heisman Football Experience Room. Tractor and Power MuseumThe Lester F. Larsen Tractor Test and Power Museum is a tribute to the rich history of the Midwest's agricultural prowess. On your visit, you'll see tractors from the early 1900's and learn how they played a key role in Nebraska's agricultural development. The museum, named after the longtime Chief Engineer of the Nebraska Tractor Test Laboratory, is housed in the original test lab facility on East Campus - now a historic landmark building. The museum opened in 1998.

University BellNow located in the Wick Alumni Center's Holling Garden at 16th and R Streets, Univeristy Bell is a rich piece of history. The bell is originally from the first building on campus, Univeristy Hall, built in 1869. The three-story building featured a central tower that housed the bell. In 1925, the top two-stories were deemed unsafe and were removed, and the remainder of the building was demolished in 1948. Stop by and see this piece of the past anytime.

Visit a local business in the HaymarketLincoln's historic Haymarket District - home to farmers markets in the summer and Railyard ice skating in the winter. Back in 1867, the original plot of Lincoln had a "Market Square," which served as an open-air market for produce and livestock, camping ground for immigrants, and a gathering space. Take a trip just off campus to support local businesses like From Nebraska Gift Shop and Licorice International. Sit down for a sandwich at Lazlo's and grab a scoop at Ivanna Cone.
